Yellow Medicine County is named after the Yellow Medicine River, which runs through the county.
The largest city and county seat are Granite Falls, which is located in both Yellow Medicine and Chippewa Counties.
It borders Redwood, Lyon, Lincoln, Lac Qui Parle, Chippewa and Renville Counties.
